MARGARET M. COADY - A First Look at 2006 Corporate Giving

- As a group, companies reported higher total giving in 2006 than in 2005, with the typical company seeing a 4.7% increase among a matched set of 89 companies. Given the beyond-budget spending of 2005 for disaster relief, this rise in total giving was not expected.
- Individual companies tell a different story : 56% increased their giving while 44% decreased giving from 2005 to 2006. In many cases, the increases and decreases were significant at more than 30%.
- For those that decreased giving, the greatest decline was in non-cash giving (down 26.8%). For those experiencing an increase, direct cash rose most (up 9.9%).
- The Corporate Giving Standard continues to gain traction, with 24 new companies and 44 of the Fortune 100 providing data. Companies that have submitted 2006 data have access to this online benchmarking tool throughout the year and can use the tool to "tell the story" of their giving within the context of larger trends.
