Earthquake Anniversary Events

  • October 4, 2007: The Government of Pakistan hosts the Annual Review Conference that reviews progress of earthquake activities from the previous year. It will include perspectives from NGOs and donor agencies, including the UN and the World Bank. Many of the SAERF grantees will be participating in this conference.
  • The American Refugee Committee International will share its contributions and achievements in the earthquake-affected areas for an upcoming publication produced by the Government of Pakistan's Earthquake Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Authority commemorating the second anniversary.
  • The International Rescue Committee is hosting a commemoration ceremony for adult community members as well as school children in Panjaran to remember the disaster and reflect upon the recovery. They will also participate in a week of activities in Mansehra that includes simulations on emergency response, seminars on future projects and lessons learned, and contributions to special newspaper and magazine editions to commemorate the anniversary.

Milestones for the South Asia Earthquake Relief Fund

  • November 9, 2005: The business leaders met with President George W. Bush at the White House to announce the launch of the South Asia Earthquake Relief Fund and website.
  • November 13, 2005: The business leaders traveled to Pakistan to view firsthand the devastation caused by the October 8 earthquake.
  • December 7, 2005: In Washington, DC, Hank McKinnell, Chairman and CEO of Pfizer, and Chairman of the Business Roundtable, invited Under Secretary of Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Karen Hughes to brief Business Roundtable members on the situation in Pakistan and discuss the need for funds to continue relief and reconstruction efforts. The Business Roundtable is an association of chief executive officers of leading U.S. corporations that is committed to advocating public policies that ensure vigorous economic growth, a dynamic global economy, and the well-trained and productive U.S. workforce essential for future competitiveness.
  • December 14-18, 2005: South Asia Earthquake Relief Fund representatives traveled to Islamabad to meet with local non-governmental organizations to assess needs in the devastated region for relief and reconstruction.
  • December 15, 2005: United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan appointed former President George Bush as Special Envoy for rehabilitation and reconstruction in quake-hit areas of northwestern Pakistan and Pakistani-controlled Kashmir.
  • January 12th, 2006: The South Asia Earthquake Relief Fund was represented at the U.S. Chamber's U.S. Pakistan Business Council meeting. Pakistan Ambassador Jehangir Karamat and a small Pakistan delegation, as well as USG officials, attended the event.
  • January 19, 2006: In New York, the five business leaders of the South Asia Earthquake Relief Fund and Ambassador Richard Holbrooke, Chairman of the Asia Society, co-hosted a reception for His Excellency Shaukat Aziz, Prime Minister of Pakistan. The Prime Minister served as the keynote speaker. Under Secretary of Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Karen Hughes also attended and addressed the audience about the importance of the relationship between Pakistan and the United States.
  • January 19, 2006: Citigroup Chairman Sanford Weill hosted a luncheon in honor of His Excellency Shaukat Aziz, Prime Minister of Pakistan.
  • January 23, 2006: In Washington, DC, representatives from the South Asia Earthquake Relief Fund attended a luncheon hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to meet with members of the U.S. Pakistan Business Council.
  • February 8, 2006: In Washington, DC, Hank McKinnell, Chairman and CEO of Pfizer and Chairman of the Business Roundtable, hosted the Business Roundtable's quarterly meeting at the White House. During the event, he recognized Roundtable members who have contributed to earthquake relief efforts and encouraged future contributions. President Bush attended the meeting.
